Money is no object when it comes to both real estate and living comfortably. It’s not about the flashy furniture, hardwood flooring or the artsy touches that make a house a home, it’s like a growing kid; it grows as you grow and from time to time, needs a new pair of pants. The pants here, of course, are your renovations.

Renovations can be little things to big things depending on your budget. It can be something as simple as repainting your kitchen wall or it can be something as intricate as making mosaic art to renovate your bathroom. One thing is for certain: it maintains the overall value of your home while punching it up a few digits on the value as well.

Improvement vs. Maintenance

These two things are definitely a plus for your home but these two things differ in terms of purpose and specifications. Improvement is just that, it adds something new to your home much like a pool, a new kitchen appliances or an extension of a room. In real estate terms, this adds value to your home in proportion to the addition. Extending the counter isn’t much of a boost as adding a backyard pool.

Maintenance however, does not give a boost or add anything new to your home. This facet of renovation is just mending the seams, keeping your property the way it is for a longer period of time. Replacing bulbs, choosing new knobs for your doors, cleaning up floors, or rewiring your home to prevent grounding may take a lot of your time, but it’s not going to take your home’s value up a notch, it maintains it.

Common Yet Practical Maintenance

Like it or not, your house will eventually succumb to age and the elements. Wood can only go so long after being exposed to years of rain and face-melting summers. If you’re the type of homeowner that doesn’t take real estate to seriously, that’s perfectly fine; but if you don’t take care of your home you’ll suffer for it.

  • Electricity and Heating. These two things are perhaps one of the most common things that can make your life a lot harder if you don’t check on them on a regular basis. Ill-planned electrical connections can cause a lot of trouble for you when you try to repair them. Both of them can cost you a lot of money if they aren’t dealt with. Having an electrician check on both may run you a couple of bucks, but that’s only a fraction of what you’re letting away compared to not having it checked at all.
  • Insulation. Insulation keeps heat in your home. Although this is probably one of the often neglected portions of maintenance, it’s still pretty much important if you’re watching your energy consumption. Sometimes checking if a heater’s system or distribution of heat isn’t enough. Poor insulation affords you with higher bills since it requires more heat to warm up your house during colder days.
  • Security. Checking your home’s security is perhaps one of the more proper ways to maintain your home. Sometimes it’s just not about mending nails and wood; something as simple as checking locks or replacing they can make a whole lot of a difference in protecting your family and your valuables.

Simple and Cheap Renovations

There are a couple of things that you can do over the weekend that can make much of a difference to how your room looks and functions without having to dig deep for the green.

  • Re-Painting. A fresh of paint on the right walls can brighten or give your room much more character. Painting doesn’t have to be a one-shot, one kill deal, you can start on one side and paint it gradually.
  • Functional DIY Carpentry. Don’t sweat on the big stuff like a convertible loft; just try out smaller projects that are simple to make yet useful to your household. Spice racks are perhaps a good example of this. Not only are you making something for your home, you’re also improving your carpentry!
  • Mosaic Tiling. Most people don’t like working with cracked tiles and throw them out like damaged goods (which they are for the most part). Make the most out of it. Most hobby or hardware stores who sell them usually sell damaged tiles cheap or give them away. If you like art and don’t mind getting on your more creative side, have try at it!
